AN ACT OF PROVIDENCE
Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for January 9.
The phrase 'an act of Providence' resonates deeply with the central truth of the Big Book: recovery is a gift, not an achievement. On page 25, it says, 'The fact is that most alcoholics, for reasons yet obscure, have lost the power of choice in drink.' That powerlessness is the bedrock. We cannot think or will our way out. The solution must come from outside ourselves. That's Providence—a Higher Power intervening where our own resources fail. Page 12 tells us, 'The great fact is just this, and nothing less: that we have had deep and effective spiritual experiences which have revolutionized our whole attitude toward life.' Those experiences are acts of Providence. They happen when we stop fighting and start trusting. The Promises on pages 83-84 describe the results: 'We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.' That's Providence in action—not a theory, but a living reality in the lives of millions.
Have you experienced a moment in recovery that felt like an 'act of Providence'—something you could not have planned or produced on your own? What did it teach you about surrender?
