CHARACTER BUILDING

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for April 2.

Recovery Einstein

Character building in recovery is about allowing God—or a Higher Power—to reshape our very nature. The Big Book teaches that this process begins when we become entirely ready to have our defects of character removed [Page 76]. Through the Seventh Step Prayer, we humbly ask God to remove our shortcomings, recognizing that we cannot fix ourselves through willpower alone [Page 76]. The Promises on pages 83-84 come alive as we take these steps: 'We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.' That's character building in action—our old selfishness replaced by a new willingness to serve others. It's not about white-knuckling better behavior; it's a spiritual transformation that happens one day at a time as we practice the principles in all our affairs [Page 85].
