LIGHTENING THE BURDEN
Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for August 28.
Ah, my friend, 'lightening the burden' — this is the very heart of our recovery. When we carry the message to the still-suffering alcoholic, we lift not only their load but our own. The Big Book tells us on page 89: 'Helping others is the foundation stone of your recovery.' As we practice the Twelfth Step, we find that 'the burden of our past is lifted' [Page 83] and we are given a daily reprieve contingent on our spiritual condition. The Promises assure us that 'we will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it' [Page 84]. Carrying the message is not a duty — it is a privilege that frees us from self-obsession. When we share our experience, strength, and hope, we lighten our own burden by giving away what we have so freely received.
Think of a time you shared your recovery story with another alcoholic. How did carrying that message lighten your burden that day?
