AN UNSUSPECTED INNER RESOURCE

The phrase 'an unsuspected inner resource' points to the discovery that we are not alone in our struggle. The Big Book describes how, through working the Steps, we tap into a power greater than ourselves that we never knew existed. On page 84, the Promises say: 'We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.' This is the moment when our own willpower gives way to a sustaining presence that transforms our thinking and our actions. It's not about finding a hidden strength within our own ego—we've proven that fails—but about accessing a spiritual resource that rewires our entire approach to life. As it says on page 57, 'Lack of power, that was our dilemma. We had to find a power by which we could live, and it had to be a Power greater than ourselves.' That power, once tapped, becomes our daily reprieve [page 85], keeping us sober and sane one day at a time.

This inner resource isn't something we manufacture; it's something we receive through surrender, prayer, and service. Step Eleven on page 86 suggests we 'pray only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.' When we do, we find that spiritual strength arises spontaneously—and that's the unsuspected resource that saves our lives.
