Real independence in AA isn't about going it alone—it's the opposite. We once thought drinking made us free, but we were actually slaves to our cravings. The Big Book says on page 62, 'We were reborn' when we stopped relying on our own willpower and turned to a Power greater than ourselves. True independence comes from dependence on God as we understand Him. On page 85, it explains that we 'are only operating on a maintenance basis,' needing a daily reprieve from our condition. So real independence means being free from the obsession to drink—and that freedom is found by staying connected, working the Steps, and helping others. We're independent from alcohol, not from the spiritual life that keeps us sober.
