A SAFETY NET
Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for November 18.
For someone in recovery, 'A SAFETY NET' is exactly what the Fellowship provides. The Big Book promises that 'we are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness' [Page 83], but that freedom only comes when we trust the net beneath us. That net is woven from the Twelve Steps, the support of other alcoholics, and the daily reprieve we receive by working with others. As Chapter 7 teaches, 'Practical experience shows that nothing will so much insure immunity from drinking as intensive work with other alcoholics' [Page 89]. This safety net isn't about preventing falls—it's about catching us when we stumble, and lifting us back up. The Promises on pages 83-84 describe the net's strength: 'We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.' The net is always there, held by those who have gone before us, and we learn to hold it for others too.
When was a time the safety net of AA caught you, and how did that experience strengthen your trust in the program?
