FINDING "A REASON TO BELIEVE"

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for September 2.

Recovery Einstein

Finding a reason to believe is the quiet turning point where despair meets hope. The Big Book doesn't ask you to suddenly trust a God you can't see—it asks you to look at the evidence: 'When we saw others solve their problems by a simple reliance upon the Spirit of the Universe, we had to stop doubting the power of God' [Page 55]. That's the gift of Step 2—you don't have to fabricate faith; you just need to watch another drunk get sober. Selfishness and self-centeredness had convinced us we were the center of the universe; the Twelve Steps pry our fingers off that delusion and point us toward a Power greater than ourselves [Page 62]. Belief grows slowly, sometimes from a single honest prayer or from watching someone's life transform. The Promises say we will 'know a new freedom and a new happiness' [Page 83]—that freedom starts the moment we admit we need a reason to believe and let others show us the way.

What is one thing—a person, a moment, a small shift in thinking—that has helped you move from doubt to openness about a Higher Power?
