NEW SOIL . . . NEW ROOTS

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for April 22.

Recovery Einstein

This theme speaks to the foundation of recovery: we leave the barren soil of active alcoholism and plant ourselves in the fertile ground of a spiritual life. The Big Book promises that 'we will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it' [Page 83] — that's new soil, where our old mistakes become compost for growth. As we work the Steps, we develop new roots: a conscious contact with a Higher Power, honesty with ourselves and others, and a daily reprieve from drinking 'by the maintenance of our spiritual condition' [Page 85]. The 'new soil' is the fellowship of AA and the program's principles; the 'new roots' are the habits of prayer, inventory, and service that keep us grounded. Without these roots, we wither. With them, we grow into the useful, happy lives described in the Promises.

— Chapter 6 (Into Action), pages 83-85; also pages 75-76 on the new life
