Cultivating faith is not about blind belief, my friend. It's about opening the door just a crack. In Chapter 4, 'We Agnostics,' the Big Book tells us that 'when we saw others solve their problems by a simple reliance on a Higher Power, we began to feel like the man who had placed his head in the noose and then wondered why the rope didn't tighten' [Page 49]. That's the beginning—seeing others get results. Then we take action: the Third Step Prayer on Page 63 is a practical way to offer our will to a God 'as we understand Him.' And later, in Step 11, we learn to 'pray only for knowledge of His will and the power to carry it out' [Page 87]. Faith grows by doing, not by debating. As the book says, 'With few exceptions, our members find that they have tapped an unsuspected inner resource which they presently identify with their own conception of a Power greater than themselves' [Page 48]. So cultivate faith by acting as if, and soon the 'as if' becomes 'it is.'
