REACHING OUT

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for December 14.

Recovery Einstein

Reaching out is the very heart of our recovery — the twelth step in action. As we read in the Big Book, 'Practical experience shows that nothing will so much insure immunity from drinking as intensive work with other alcoholics' [Page 89]. When we extend a hand to the still-suffering, we not only carry the message but secure our own sobriety. This is how we keep what we have by giving it away. The Promises tell us, 'We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows' [Page 84]. So reaching out isn't just about helping someone else — it's part of our spiritual maintenance, a daily reprieve that depends on our connection with God and our willingness to be useful.

— Chapter 7, pages 89-103

Who in your life today — whether a newcomer or someone you haven't spoken to in a while — could use a simple call or visit to let them know they're not alone?
