I AM A MIRACLE

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for January 1.

Recovery Einstein

You know, when we say 'I am a miracle,' we're not being dramatic—we're being honest. The Big Book makes this very clear in the Promises: 'We will know a new freedom and a new happiness.' [Page 83] That's not a minor improvement; that's a complete transformation of a person who was utterly hopeless. The book goes on to say, 'We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.' [Page 84] For an alcoholic to reach that point is nothing short of a miracle—a spiritual experience that changes our very nature.

This miracle isn't a one-time event. It's a daily reprieve contingent on our spiritual condition [Page 85]. Each morning we wake up sober, each time we help another alcoholic, we're witnessing a miracle in action. The Big Book tells us that 'the alcoholic at certain times has no effective mental defense against the first drink.' [Page 43] That's the cursed state. But when we work the Steps, we receive an 'incredible paradox of finding a new strength' [Page 25]. That's the miracle.

So when you say 'I am a miracle,' you're not bragging—you're simply stating a fact. It's humility, really. You're acknowledging that something beyond your own power happened in your life, and you're grateful for it. And the best part? This miracle keeps happening every time you carry the message to another suffering soul.
