A CHANGED OUTLOOK

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for June 1.

Recovery Einstein

The theme 'A Changed Outlook' is at the heart of the Big Book's promise of recovery. On page 83, we read that we will 'lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows.' This isn't just a behavioral shift—it's a fundamental transformation of how we see ourselves, others, and life itself. It means the self-centered fear that once drove us to drink is replaced by a genuine desire to be useful and loving. As it says on page 84, 'We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us.' That's the changed outlook—a newfound clarity and peace that comes from working the Steps and connecting with a Higher Power.

This change isn't automatic or permanent. As the Big Book explains on page 85, we receive a 'daily reprieve' contingent on our spiritual condition. A changed outlook requires continuous effort—prayer, meditation, and helping others. The Third Step Prayer (page 63) asks for deliverance from 'the bondage of self,' which is the old outlook. Recovery offers a new one, but we must actively embrace it each day.
