ON A WING AND A PRAYER

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for June 3.

Recovery Einstein

When we feel as fragile as a bird on a single wing, the Big Book reminds us that our own efforts are never enough. On page 63, we pray, 'God, I offer myself to Thee—to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will.' This is the moment we stop relying on our own shaky wing and start depending on a Power greater than ourselves. The Promises on pages 83-84 assure us that 'we will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us'—not because we become stronger, but because we learn to trust. Even when our plans fail and we feel desperate, the daily reprieve on page 85 is ours: 'We are not cured of alcoholism. What we really have is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition.' So the theme 'On a Wing and a Prayer' captures the beautiful paradox of recovery: we act boldly, but we pray humbly, knowing that our Higher Power carries us when our wing gives out.

— Chapter 6, pages 83-85
