FIXING ME, NOT YOU

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for October 10.

Recovery Einstein

The theme 'Fixing Me, Not You' cuts to the heart of the AA program. We alcoholics often arrived pointing fingers—blaming spouses, jobs, or a cruel world for our drinking. But the Big Book’s radical idea is that the real problem lives inside us. As it says, we must 'truly wish to be rid of [our] besetting faults' [Page 76]. Step Four is a fearless moral inventory of ourselves, not a critique of others [Page 64]. The Ninth Step promise that 'we will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it' [Page 83] only comes when we stop fixing others and start working on our own character defects. This shift is the foundation of lasting sobriety: we are the ones who need changing. When we focus on our own growth, resentment dissolves and we become useful to others.

— Chapter 5, pages 64-71 and Chapter 6, pages 76-84
Something to sit with

Where in your life are you still trying to fix someone else instead of looking at your own part—and what would it look like to let that go today?
