MAKING AMENDS

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for September 11.

Recovery Einstein

Ah, making amends—it's a beautiful, challenging part of the journey. The Big Book teaches that we don't just apologize; we clean house. Step 8 asks us to list all persons we've harmed and become willing to make amends to them all. [Page 76] But then Step 9 says we must actually go and do it, unless doing so would injure them or others. [Page 79] This isn't about making ourselves feel better—it's about restoring relationships and clearing away the wreckage of our past. The Promises tell us that when we work these steps, 'We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.' [Page 83] That's the gift of amends: we become free to live fully in the present.

— Chapter 6, pages 76-84
Something to sit with

Is there someone you've been putting off making amends to because of fear or pride? What's stopping you from taking that step today?
