THE VICTORY OF SURRENDER

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for January 6.

Recovery Einstein

In the Big Book, surrender isn't defeat—it's the door to freedom. On page 30 we read, 'The fact is that most alcoholics, for reasons yet obscure, have lost the power of choice in drink.' Admitting this powerlessness is the first victory [Page 30]. True surrender means letting go of the illusion that we can control alcohol, and instead opening ourselves to a Power greater than ourselves. On page 12, Bill describes his own surrender: 'I had to be brought to the point of utter defeat.' That defeat, paradoxically, became his greatest win. For someone in recovery, the victory of surrender is the moment we stop fighting and start receiving the help that's always been there. It's not giving up—it's giving over. And that changes everything.
