GIVING WITHOUT STRINGS
Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for May 19.
Giving without strings is at the heart of Step 12. The Big Book teaches that we carry the message not to get something back, but because our own survival depends on it. On page 89, it says, 'Though you may not like its implications, you must do it if you are to survive.' This isn't about obligation—it's about recognizing that our sobriety thrives when we give freely. When we help another alcoholic with no expectation of gratitude or result, we experience the new freedom promised on page 83: 'We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.' That freedom comes from letting go of control and trusting the process. The Promises on page 84 remind us, 'We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.' Giving without strings means we don't keep score, we don't demand outcomes—we simply offer what was freely given to us.
When was the last time you helped someone in recovery without expecting anything in return, and what did you learn about yourself from that experience?
