Before the Tradition

Dr. Bob, co-founder of A.A., gave his sober years to drunks, and in his Big Book story he wrote down exactly why (p. 181): "1. Sense of duty. 2. It is a pleasure. 3. Because in so doing I am paying my debt to the man who took time to pass it on to me. 4. Because every time I do it I take out a little more insurance for myself against a possible slip." Read the list again and notice what is not on it. Money is not reason five. It is not anywhere — it never crossed his mind as a reason to help a drunk. Duty, pleasure, debt, insurance. The co-founder's whole economy fits in four lines and not one of them can be invoiced. Tradition 8 did not invent that. It wrote down what Dr. Bob was already doing, so nobody could ever undo it.

"Alcoholics Anonymous should remain forever nonprofessional, but our service centers may employ special workers."

Read the Long Form (pp. 563–566). The short form on pp. 561–562 is the one everybody quotes — but the Long Form is where the Traditions actually say what they mean. Tradition 3's "no other affiliation" clause, for instance, exists only in the Long Form. That single clause is why no treatment centre can own an A.A. group. Most of what circulates online skips it.

And a distinction worth keeping straight: the Traditions are governance, not theology. They bind A.A. groups and the Fellowship — not individuals, and not outside businesses. They were adopted in 1950 to keep A.A. from being owned or co-opted. They are not a rulebook for your personal life.
