EMOTIONAL BALANCE

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for September 5.

Recovery Einstein

Emotional balance for the recovering alcoholic is not the absence of strong feelings, but the ability to experience them without being overwhelmed. The Big Book promises that 'we will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us' [Page 84], and this comes from working Steps 10 and 11. We learn to 'pause when agitated or doubtful' and ask for the right thought or action [Page 87]. This is the daily reprieve—not perfection, but a moment-by-moment reliance on our Higher Power to restore us to sanity [Page 85]. Emotional balance means we can feel anger, fear, or joy fully, yet not let those emotions drive us back to the bottle.
